Perfectly Frank
"The thing about Mad Frank is he's totally dependable." I'm talking to his biographer James Morton about
meeting one of the UK's most notorious gangsters. 40 years doing bird, convictions for knifing and causing
prison riots and 40 killings to his name. "If he says he'll meet you at 2 - he'll be there. Not like the
other villains I've interviewed who often never show." There's a pause. "In fact he's probably too
dependable. If he says he's going to break your head he'll do that too."
We're passing the hospital in Marylebone. "The only hospital in London with a helipad," he remarks.
"Unfortunately they never had it when I done Eric Mason, so I had to bring him over here meself and dump
him on the steps." What sounds like the most innocuous of threats tipped Frank to 'do' him with an axe.
"You can't go around saying what he said. I know it sounds a bit rough to people like you who don't
understand the rules, but it wasn't excessive." Frank talks a lot about his world and mine - two different
places, with different codes. How come you had an axe in the car Frank? "It's always handy to have an axe
in the car." Where did you keep it? In the boot or in the glove compartment? "I always kept it handy.
I've sued the police and the hospital about that but they never give it back. Good axe it was too.
Bought it at Harrods."
