Get your kicks - Jeremy Head hits Route 66 in a classic convertible

Route 66 carsWe'd covered about 10 miles. It was a beautiful day. Top down, cruising out of LA with thousands of miles before us, not even 12 hours of jet lag could dent our moods. Eyes forward, me and my travelling partner, Tom, were concentrating on 10 lanes of weaving traffic when disaster struck. The blast of the siren made us both jump. It was a cop car. He was pulling us over. We'd hardly started out and we were already in trouble with the law. There was the standard grim-faced request for driving licence and insurance. And then he smiled. He really just wanted to check out our wheels. This wasn't the last time this would happen - we were stopped all over the States. Every guy of a certain age we met had made out with his first high school sweetheart in the back of a Ford Cougar XR7 convertible. People ran their fingers over the bodywork. They beeped their horns as they cruised by. The cop explained that we'd crossed into an overtaking lane when we shouldn't have. We apologised and told him we were driving this lady all the way to Oklahoma. He smiled again. "That's some trip fellas. Wish I could do that too. Now you take more care and have a good day."
