Island of Adventure - Jeremy Head visits stunning Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka TempleThe orange-robed monk motions me forward through the crowd of bodies. I chuck a handful of coins down as I've seen other pilgrims do and kneel to touch my forehead against the sacred stone. I get a brief rush of excitement about participating in such a holy ceremony before I'm shunted on out of the doorway by the procession of other devotees. I've just touched the footprint of Buddha.

After several decades of unrest, Sri Lanka is emerging as a great new destination for the more adventurous traveller. The once precarious political situation has stabilised and tourism to this small island country off the south coast of India is tipped to increase drastically. Now is very much the time to experience its ancient culture, scenic views and remarkable wildlife - before everyone else does.
